1. Do Your Yorkie Homework
Before anything else, take some time to learn about the breed.
Yorkies are small companion dogs, but they aren’t necessarily “easy” dogs. They can be energetic, opinionated, sensitive, and surprisingly fearless. They also require regular grooming and benefit from training and socialization.
Learn about:
Yorkie temperament and personality
Feeding and nutrition
House training
Grooming and coat care
Exercise needs
Training and socialization
Common health concerns
How to safely care for a small dog
The more you know before your Yorkie comes home, the more confident you’ll feel as a new Yorkie parent.
2. Find the Right Yorkie for You
This is a big decision, so don’t feel pressured to rush it.
If you’re getting a puppy from a breeder, take time to research the breeder carefully. A responsible breeder should be willing to answer your questions, provide appropriate health information, explain how the puppies are raised, and allow you to learn about the puppy’s parents.
If you’re considering adoption or rescue, ask questions about the dog’s personality, history, behavior, medical needs, and how they interact with people and other animals.
Remember: You’re not just choosing a Yorkie. You’re choosing a family member.
3. Find a Veterinarian
Don’t wait until your Yorkie is sick to start looking for a veterinarian.
Try to find a veterinary clinic before your new pup comes home. You may want to ask friends, family, or other local dog owners for recommendations.
Once your Yorkie arrives, schedule a wellness visit and bring any records you’ve received, including vaccination and deworming information.
Your veterinarian can help you establish a plan for:
Vaccinations
Parasite prevention
Nutrition
Dental care
Spaying or neutering
Wellness exams
Microchipping
